5 Natural Remedies to Get Rid of Fleas In and Around Your Home

Fleas can be a huge nuisance, especially in the summer months. And once you’ve got them, it can seem impossible to get rid of them. Luckily there are some home treatments that will get rid of fleas and keep them out of your house for good. Here are a few of my tried and true methods.

1. Flea Control Using Dawn Soap

What you’ll need:

  • Dawn soap
  • Dinner plates or bowls
  • Tea candles
  • Warm water

  • At night, place a plate or a bowl on the floor in each of the rooms in your home, preferably in the middle of the room.
  • Fill them with warm water. If you are using a bowl, fill it partly and if using a plate, fill it to the brim.
  • Add the Dawn soap to the water. Use a good amount of it, about a capful.
  • Place one tea candle in the center of each plate. If using bowl, you may not be able to place the candle inside it. You can place the candle near the bowl.
  • Light the tea candles.
  • The fleas are attracted to light. When they jump towards the light, they will get stuck in the high viscosity of the liquid soap. By doing so, the fleas will get trapped and die.
  • If your house is badly infested with fleas, you may continue to do this for 3-4 nights.

Warning: Since you will be using fire at night when applying this home remedy to trap fleas, you should be extra cautious. Staying awake till all the candles get extinguished is highly recommended. Keep all flea traps away from your children and pets.

2. Salt Remedy

Salt can be used to get rid of tough fleas, especially from your carpets. Salt becomes a dehydration agent for fleas and will dry out their bodies.

What you’ll need:

  • Table salt or any type of sea salt (you will need a decent amount of salt, depending upon the size of the area where you need to sprinkle the salt to kill fleas)
  • Large spice bottle with a shaker top

  • If your salt is not finely ground, grind it to get a fine salt powder.
  • Fill up your spice bottle with salt leaving a little room on the top so you can shake and sprinkle the salt more freely.
  • Sprinkle the salt over your carpets in each room, which should cover the area evenly.
  • Leave for 12 to 48 hours.
  • After 1-2 days, vacuum thoroughly.

3. Vinegar Spray

Vinegar can be used for so many things – even for flea control.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 gallon vinegar
  • 1/2 gallon water
  • 16 oz. lemon juice (can be freshly squeezed or you can use premade lemon juice)
  • 8 oz. witch hazel

Vacuum rooms thoroughly then spray this mixture every 7 days for at least 2 -3 weeks. You can also spray this on furniture, walls, etc. You can vacuum every day while using this remedy.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar Spray

Your dog’s skin and coat should be slightly acidic for fleas to find him inhospitable. You can easily achieve this by spraying your dog with this homemade apple cider vinegar spray.

What you’ll need:

  • 4 oz warm water
  • 6 oz ACV, unfiltered and preferably organic
  • ¼ tsp of sea salt or pink Himalayan salt

Mix the ingredients in a small spray bottle and spray your dog’s coat and underbelly weekly, avoiding the eyes or any open wounds.

5. Garlic Remedy for Your Yard

It can all start with just a few fleas hanging out in your yard and before you know it you have a flea problem that most likely will be an inside problem as well.

Fleas don’t like garlic! It’s a great natural flea repellent that’s safe to use in the yard and is safe for your outside pets.

What you’ll need:

  • 8 heads of chopped garlic (there’s no need to peel it for this recipe)
  • 1 gallon of almost boiling water

  • Place the garlic in an extra large soup pan and pour the water over the top.
  • Cover and let the mixture steep for 12 hours.
  • Pour through a strainer into a garden sprayer.
  • Lightly spray your lawn and garden area.

Note: If used too heavily, garlic might harm some of those beneficial bugs you do want in your yard, so just give everything a light spray and don’t soak your grass or plants in the liquid.
